Transient Moments: New
York:
My fascination with photography stems from the fact that when something
is photographed, that fraction of a second is in the past, and it only
exists in the photograph. With that in mind, each photograph made, whether
for memory or contemplation, is a record of human time. This recent series
ponders ephemeral moments that humans experience; those that occupy most
of our daily lives, yet last only a brief second. Through documentation
of human gestures, motion and mundane occurrences, these are recorded
moments of those spent seconds or minutes that bring us to specific destinies.
In these images I use New York as starting point for the work, because
throughout history New Yorkers have been metaphors of resilience. The
global network that exists in New York, serves as representation of much
of humanity. In a broader context, these images also aim to depict transcendental
experiences. The figures exist in a space where color has been deleted.
In doing so, the figures are removed from their found reality; they exist
encapsulated by the moment recorded. They are pure documentary images,
partly color, part black and white. Except for the removal of background
color, no other manipulation is made. The experience remains authentic,
but the time and place it dwells in becomes transient. The subject is
both the “transient experience” and the figures that exist
within the space.
Prints are 13" x 19". All prints are made on Fine Art Paper.
